I really love listening to eBooks with the Apples built-in "Speak Screen" + iBooks or Kindle. When I saw Voice Dream, I wondered why people would rather pay US$ 9.99 for an app which seems to have the same function as the free alternative. After reading many extremely positive and genuine comments, I decided to give it a try. Listening to eBooks is a daily routine for me, any improvement would be highly useful. Im happy to say that this is one of the best purchases Ive made and I will rate it as 5 stars and an essential app. A comparison of "Speak Screen + iBooks/Kindle" (SS+i/K) vs "Voice Dream" (VD). VD: Flawless continuous playing of the text-to-audio. SS+iBooks: Stop playing whenever a photo is on top of a page. SS+Kindle: Stop playing whenever you turn off the screen, or switch to another app. VD: The playback can be paused by remote control button on headset, or a simple double-finger tap on screen. SS: Can be paused with two one-finger taps. Cannot be paused by headset. Full of bugs if you pressed the remote control button on headset by accident, sometimes required a soft reset to fix the problem. VD: Just point to any sentence, and it starts reading that particular section. SS+iBooks: Very difficult to select a paragraph and read that part out. SS+Kindle: Cant select a part to read it out at all. VD: Easily see the remaining reading time required for the book, the remaining time changes when you change the reading speed. SS+i/K: They show nothing about the remaining hours at all, I feel like I was wandering in a jungle. VD: Highlight the sentence and word in different colours. SS+iBooks: Highlight a particular word only. SS+Kindle: Highlight the whole page... it looks weird. VD: I downloaded the Graham voice (UK), wow, it was much better than the built-in voices of iOS. SS: Even the iOS Siri Male or Alex couldnt match anything remotely similar to the Graham voice. VD: Its very easy to configure Voice Dream to lock the language preference and force it to read in one single language. SS: The iOS built-in "Speak Screen" cant distinguish the difference of Asian languages very well, sometimes I listen to eBooks in Chinese and it started reading it in the Japanese or Korean way, which renders the whole passage unintelligible at all. This is the single most annoying bug Ive encountered using the built-in iOS dictation. Voice Dream fixes it. VD: Another function which I also used daily. It can speed up a podcast! I use RSSRadio to download a local audio news summary, it was ~ 12 minutes. The RSSRadio lets you play the audio at X2 speed, but it was still too slow for me. I could open the podcast in Voice Dream and use it to tune up the speed to X4! Others thought it was not possible to understand, but I know I can still understand it perfectly. A note to the Mr Chen who wrote this wonderful app. Im very happy about my purchase, but the decision process was quite long for me as it was expensive (when compared to other apps on iPhone AppStore). It was well worth the money for me because it does everything not only better , but _*perfectly*_. However, it was difficult to recommend this app to my friends. Sometimes I had to lend them my iPhone to try it out for a few minutes, but I dont think they could enjoy the benefits of it with such a short time (while I was standing next to them as well). It would be better if you could bring back the Lite or Trial version, just let people use it to listen to eBooks for 100 minutes for free, Im sure that many people would be happy to pay for your app once they have more time to immerse into the experience.

This app is so powerful, it replaced my special reading device, very very impressive and good, I use it all day long to read books, novels, Articles, and the list goes on. Thanks for the great work

Cant load PDFs from iPhone, extremely difficult and complicated to navigate. Do not purchase

Just purchased this app. Interface is good. But has some very annoying feaures: (1) if you swipe left to right when it is reading, by accient, switches into a mode that shows only three lines at a time. I am constantly doing this. No control to turn it off. (2) I asked it to read a epub book to me. I cant get it to select text and start reading from that point on. (3) It cannot access any books stored on your iphone. You have to copy them to the phone using file-sharing.

I have been using this app for a couple years and really enjoy it. The latest update is slightly different that I have been used to, but that doesnt change my opinion of it.

There’s like a kazillion voices listed in the settings, and 90% of them are listed as “Unavailable.” For an app that costs $9.99, that’s a lot of money to dish out for an app that doesn’t really give you everything it should. It’s about like buying a car and being told that you’ll get the frame, the engine and the tires, but you don’t get the steering gas pedal, or gear shift. Rather lame. Either make the other voices available or lower the price. Also, due to a recent update, the app doesn’t work well with multiple page documents. It doesn’t progress from one page to the next. When it finishes reading a page, it starts reading the same page all over again. The only way to get it to read each page is to manually forward to the next page and then click on the first word at the top. Then it’s necessary to keep doing this page after page. Really a huge nuisance.

This app has changed my life and is in my top 3 used app of all types! I would like to see some additional sources added such as Amazon Cloud Drive and Microsoft OneDrive but its hard to complain too much because the app is so fantastic as it is.

I like this app, but you cant make it start reading on the page you want. You have to highlight exactly where you want to start.

This is an excellent reading app. The integration with Pocket and being able to pull in items from Google Drive make it dead simple to manage content. Combine this with being able to switch between text to speech and reading place this app far beyond any other reader app ( kindle, iBooks , kobo,). Also their support is very responsive to questions. Please keep up the great work!

I am a teacher. I love using Voice Dream Reader with my students who use iPads. It is clean, organized and dependable. The accessibility features that you can manipulate are easy to locate and to turn off/on. The folders allow for multi-course organization which is very helpful to high school students. I love that it integrates directly with Google Drive and Bookshare. I look forward to more images being integrated but I did read somewhere that they are on their way. I would LOVE to see a Chrome App or an extension to use on ChromeBooks. Any thoughts about developing that? Keep up the great work VDR team!!!!!!

I rarely write reviews but I am NOT getting any response in regard to my problem. Ever since the update there are many words mispronounced and garbled. When this issue is fixed I WILL write a follow up review a praise this app as it deserves. I really LOVED this app and hope it works again soon.

Absolutely stellar app that sets the standard when it comes to TTS! Voice dream reader will help you get through a ton of reading material! well worth the $15 price! Flawlessly integrated with bookshare and several other services. it just keeps getting better! You can tell the developer cares about their customers. WARNING: BACK UP BEFORE UPDATING OR ACTIVATING iCloud SYNC!! Note: DRM Protection can be removed. Also, on he 16th of April the developer announced that they will bring the built-in web browser back in version 4.0.3 (dont worry...save to VD is still available as an option for opening webpages from safari.) WE LOVE YOU VDR! keep up the great work!

It is the best audio reader on the market. However this app lost 2 stars due to no real customer service and being charged for two voices when you just want to buy one voice kinda leaves you feeling a bit angry. So be careful when buying an additional voice because no one will help you

I love this app! I find it very useful for listening to articles that I dont have time to sit and read. I listen while I am walking and get exercise at the same time. As you should expect, the speech is not as good as a real person talking. Because it is computer-generated, I dont expect it to be perfect, but it is quite good. Im often impressed how good the voice inflections actually are! And it has some great features, too. One of the features I use all of the time: When I see a long Internet article that I am interested in, I send the URL (link) to Pocket (Read It Later). Within a few minutes, it shows up in Voice Dream, so I can listen to it, or read it if I want. Some really useful new features and enhancements come with each upgrade. The developer is quite responsive and does a great job enhancing this program. I use it almost every day, and wish more people knew about it. Im even more impressed with the improvements in each upgrade. It deserves to win lots of awards for best productivity apps! This program ROCKS!

I purchased this app so I could listen to my iBooks and not have to read them. After I paid $10 for the app and over a week later I still have not been able to use it because I cannot figure out how to get my iBooks to be read using the app. I contacted tech support only to receive an email back that it is a one-man show that created this app a father of two a husband, etc. and if somebody had issues or questions they should listen to their app manual. If I am going to pay $10 for a app I better have tech-support that will give me better answers. So far this app is useless and I would not suggest it to any friends or family. If I dont receive an email back before the end of this week I will put it on my social media pages exactly what I think of the app. #hirehelp

The pocket articles can not be shown. I am still waiting for the customer service to help me. Another thing is after I re-downloading, the voices that I had before are missing, I only find them in shop, which means I need to buy them!!

This update fixed the issue where the braille display would not read the whole thing. I am so happy because I was about to go to another app but I dont have to anymore. Thank you

I tried several different reader apps and none even come close to this app. I use a female voice called "Heather" and a male voice called "Will", they are so life like. My only gripe is if you are listening to several different articles one after another. There is no way to know the title of the next article in the cue unless you look at the screen. You need to have a selection to read the title headers or not. If Im driving in my car and listening to articles all I get is a beep but no announcement of the title that is now playing, frustrating. This happens when I am downloading articles from "Pocket." I am glad see that they still continue to update the app and improve on its features. After all is said and done Voice Reader is still the best reader on the market. I still recommend it highly.

My below comments still hold true. This is a fantastic app for accessing content from a variety of sources. Now with iCloud sync, its a dream come true. I love being able to switch between devices. Im delighted to be able to use multiple literacy modalities to access text --speech or braille for me. I do wish the" Voiceover rotor worked more reliably when in the text box to check the spelling of a given word, ICloud sync has truly added so much to this app for me. I love that I can finally sync Bookshare books easily between devices, and pick up where I left off. This app has certainly been a game-changer for me. Original review: Wonderful reading app. Its my choice for accesssing DAISY files, Bookshare content, as well as content stored in my Dropbox. Thank you for the improved Braille support. Now, I can switch quite easily between reading braille and listening to text. The fact that the last line of text is no longer repeated when accessing content through braille makes this app even better than previous verssions. What would make this truly a dream app for me is if I could have content sync between devices, so I could start reading a book from Bookshare on my phone and pick up later on my iPad. Thanks for always improving this app.
